If you can't afford better OS, you have some choices, but none of them are too good.

1) FreeDOS is not designed to run a dual-core processor. It has some uses as an emergency boot-up system, but even its champions admit that it runs poorly on Windows machines.

2) You might have better luck with Linux. Be aware that we get posts in this forum from Linux users who wanted to go back to Windows but couldn't re-install their legal copy of Windows.

3) Assuming that you can run XP, wait until Microsoft comes out with their free Windows 9 beta edition next year (maybe). Don't laugh. I loved their free Windows 8 Preview Edition, and their Windows 7 Preview Edition was pretty good.

And my best suggestion of all: put your laptop in a safe place and work all the overtime you can until you can afford $120 to buy the Windows Upgrade that you need. And be careful with the store that sold you a good laptop that didn't have an OS.
